What Does (-3.5) Mean in Soccer Betting?
A (-3.5) handicap means that the favored team must win by at least 4 goals for your bet to win.
This bet is used when there’s a strong favorite and the bookmaker adds a virtual disadvantage of 3.5 goals to the favorite before the match starts.
Since goals can’t be in halves, the 0.5 ensures there’s no draw/push. You either win or lose the bet.
How the Handicap Works
- You are subtracting 3.5 goals from the team you bet on.
- Then compare the adjusted score to the opponent’s real score.
Key Outcomes:
| Final Score | Adjusted Score (Team A -3.5) | Bet Result |
|---|---|---|
| Team A 5–1 Team B | 5 – 3.5 = 1.5 > 1 | Win |
| Team A 4–1 Team B | 4 – 3.5 = 0.5 > 1 | Lose |
| Team A 3–0 Team B | 3 – 3.5 = -0.5 < 0 | Lose |
| Team A 6–2 Team B | 6 – 3.5 = 2.5 > 2 | Win |
Winning Condition:
- The team with **-3.5 handicap must win by **at least 4 goals.Example:
- Team A (-3.5) vs Team B

- Team A (-3.5) vs Team B
- Final score: 3–0, 4–2, 2–0 → Bet loses.
