Handicap (2-way) In football Sports Betting Explained with Examples + Betting Tips

Handicap (2-way) in Football Betting — Explained Simply

Handicap (2-way) is a type of football bet where one team is given a goal advantage or disadvantage, and there are only two possible outcomes:

  • Home team wins (after handicap)
  • Away team wins (after handicap)

Unlike Asian Handicap (which can include refunds/pushes), 2-way handicap always has a winner and a loser — no draw option after adjustment.

How It Works

A bookmaker gives a virtual goal head start to one team:

  • Strong team → gets negative handicap (–1, –2, etc.)
  • Weak team → gets positive handicap (+1, +2, etc.)

Then the final result is adjusted before deciding the bet.

Example 1: Handicap –1.5

Match: Arsenal vs Burnley
Handicap: Arsenal –1.5

What it means:

  • Arsenal must win by 2 goals or more for the bet to win.

Example scores:

  • Arsenal 2–0 Burnley (Win)
  • Arsenal 3–1 Burnley (Win)
  • Arsenal 1–0 Burnley (Lose)
  • Arsenal 2–1 Burnley (Lose)

Example 2: Handicap +1.5

Match: Burnley vs Arsenal
Handicap: Burnley +1.5

What it means:

Burnley starts with +1.5 goals advantage.

Example scores:

  • Burnley 1–2 Arsenal (still lose, because 1+1.5 = 2.5 vs 2 → Arsenal still ahead)
  • Burnley 1–1 Arsenal (Win)
  • Burnley 0–1 Arsenal (Win, because handicap makes it 1.5–1)

Example 3: Balanced Match (0 Handicap)

Match: Chelsea vs Tottenham
Handicap: Chelsea 0 vs Tottenham 0

Key Features of 2-Way Handicap

  • Only 2 outcomes (no draw option)
  • Used when bookmakers want to remove draw market
  • Makes strong vs weak matches more balanced
  • Common in football betting, especially Asian markets

Betting Tips

  • Use –1.5 or –2.0 handicap only for strong dominant teams
  • Avoid heavy handicaps if teams are unpredictable
  • Check recent form + injuries before selecting handicap bets
  • Smaller handicaps (–0.5 / +0.5) are safer for beginners
  • Combine with over/under markets for better value
