Handicap 0.5 (incl. overtime) in Basketball Betting
Handicap 0.5 is one of the simplest and most popular basketball bets. It removes the possibility of a draw and gives you a clear win-or-lose outcome.
What It Means
- Team A (-0.5) → Must win the game (by any margin)
- Team B (+0.5) → Must NOT lose (but in basketball, this effectively also means they must win)
Since basketball games cannot end in a draw (overtime is included), the +0.5 is mainly used to mirror the -0.5 side.
Example
Match:
Lakers vs Warriors
Bet Options:
- Lakers (-0.5)
- Warriors (+0.5)
Outcomes:
| Final Score | Result |
|---|---|
| Lakers 102 – 100 Warriors | Lakers (-0.5) wins |
| Lakers 98 – 105 Warriors | Warriors (+0.5) wins |
There is no scenario where both lose or push.
Key Insight
Handicap -0.5 = Just pick the winner
So instead of using 1X2 (Home/Away), bookmakers use handicap -0.5 to:
- Simplify betting markets
- Offer slightly different odds
When to use -0.5
- When you are confident a team will win, regardless of margin
- Good for favorites with strong form
Be careful
- Don’t overthink it — it’s basically a moneyline bet
- Odds are often lower compared to higher handicaps (-3.5, -5.5)
Pro Tip
If you want better odds, instead of -0.5:
- Try -2.5 or -4.5 if you believe the team will win comfortably
